(November 27) Workshop “The French Citizens’ Convention on Climate: A forerunner to future democracy?”

On November 27, 2020, PSE – Paris School of Economics is glad to organize an online workshop (Zoom) entitled “The French Citizens’ Convention on Climate: A forerunner to future democracy?” as part of the PSE collaborative project “Economie et Philosophie.”

A presentation will be made by researchers who have observed the whole process of this citizen assembly that started in October 2019. Then a panel discussion will be offered by specialists of deliberative democracy and political philosophy. Are such citizen participatory schemes a political sideshow or a key component of an ideal deliberative democracy?

Zoe lives with her mother who is unemployed. This smart and determined 12-year-old college girl would like to help her find a job. How to achieve this? It is the starting point that will lead Zoé to ask the right questions, thanks in particular to Mrs. Robinson, her neighbor retired economics teacher, and her friends, on all the topics that govern the current economic world: Work – Unemployment – Globalization – Banking – Technical progress – Inequalities – Parity – Pensions – Basic income – Ecology – Money – Finance – Europe – Brexit. A living story to allow children (10-15 years) to approach with clarity the major subjects of the economy.

Philipp Ketz becomes professor at PSE

After five years as Assistant professor at PSE, Philipp Ketz, scholar of economic theory, has become a permanent researcher – as PSE professor and CNRS research fellow.

After completing a Masters in econometrics and operations research at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands in 2009, and a second in economics at Brown University in the US in 2011, Philipp Ketz continued his studies at Brown as a PhD candidate under the supervision of Frank Kleibergen. He defended his thesis entitled “Subvector inference when the true parameter vector is near or at the boundary” in 2015.

His work chiefly concerns choice and the parametrisation of theoretical models, with a view to making them more precise. These models can be applied in a great number of economic areas, for example in the automobile, real estate and donor organ markets. He develops new methods aimed at building intervals of confidence adapted for certain economic models in order to quantify sampling uncertainties. He highlights the necessary flexibility of the Logit model thanks to its random coefficients, taking into account consumers’ heterogenous preferences, and the relevance of new approaches when the model’s parameters are subject to certain restrictions. His research results have been published in major international journals such as the Journal of Econometrics.

His current work includes:

  • Detailed Decomposition of Differences in Distribution: A Causal Interpretation (with Blaise Melly)
  • Measurement Error and Omitted Variable Bias in Nonlinear Models (with Blaise Melly)
  • Measuring sex-selective abortion: How many women abort? (with Aditi Dimri and Véronique Gille)
  • Subvector inference in GARCH-X type models

Philipp Ketz is also involved in teaching. He is responsible for the courses in econometrics, econometric methods and machine learning, at several levels (specialist university internships, Masters 1 and Masters 2) at PSE. He also co-ordinates the international econometrics seminar, and in recent years, has co-organised the international seminar Labour and Public Economics and other events, including the 10th international French Econometrics Conference (November 2018).

The Paris School of Economics (PSE) is hiring one Assistant Professor in Economics.

The Paris School of Economics (PSE) is offering one Assistant Professor position in Economics on competitive terms, starting Sept 1, 2021 for a period of six years corresponding to a three year contract renewable once after a “mid-term” review. The assistant Professor will then be offered permanent positions in the French academic system following a successful tenure evaluation.

PSE invites applications from strong candidates in all areas of economics. It offers an exciting research environment, a low teaching load and no administrative obligations.
Proven research abilities are necessary and the PhD should be completed by the date of the appointment. Knowledge of French is NOT required.

Any query or further details about applications should be sent to recruitingpse gmail.com. We will interview candidates online during the 2020 European job market meeting between Monday, December 14 and Friday, December 18. Candidates may subsequently be invited to give a job talk at PSE.

September 2020: Suanna Oh & Nikhil Vellodi join PSE.

Suanna Oh

JPEG - 17.3 kb

Suanna Oh is a researcher in development economics with a specific interest in cultural factors and behaviors related to the labor market. In 2010, she joined Duke University (USA) to carry out a double Bachelor – BS in Economics and BA in Mathematics. In 2012, she completed a MA in Economics at the University of Toronto (Canada). After working as a research assistant at Northwestern University (USA) for two years, Suanna conducted her doctoral studies at Columbia University (USA) until 2020, including an exchange program with the University of California, Berkeley (USA) in 2018. During her studies, she received numerous scholarships, including the National Science Foundation’s doctoral dissertation grant.

With her arrival, PSE strengthens the Development group, and especially its coverage of behavioral development economics. One of her working papers explores the links between the financial constraints of employees and their productivity (with Supreet Kaur, Sendhil Mullainathan, and Frank Schilbach). Another examines the effects of norms and identities on the labor market using the links between castes and jobs in India. In addition, she is currently studying the effect of gender norms on women’s productivity (with Sneha Subramanian) and workers’ demand for flexible work arrangements in India (with Nandita Krishnaswamy and Yogita Shamdasani).

Nikhil Vellodi

JPEG - 14.9 kb

Prior to his arrival at PSE, Nikhil Vellodi was a Post-doctoral fellow at Princeton University (USA), within the William S. Dietrich II Economic Theory Center. His initial schooling took place between England and the United States. In 2004, Nikhil entered the Cambridge University where he completed a BA and then a Masters in Mathematics, specializing in algebraic number theory. He then joined the University of Warwick (2009) to follow an Economics MSc. Later, he worked for 2 years as an economist in the Bank of Papua New Guinea. In 2013, he continued his studies and joined the doctoral program in economics at New York University, defending his thesis in 2019. During his training, Nikhil received numerous awards and scholarships, and held various teaching positions.

With his arrival, PSE consolidates their Theory group, in particular applied theory and industrial organization. Nikhil is particularly interested in the economics of online retail. His recent work has studied how consumer reviews erect barriers to entry for new firms in ratings-guided markets, and the implications for privacy policy of voluntary disclosure by consumers in online search platforms. His current research builds on these themes whilst exploring new issues, such as private-label imitation by vertically-integrated platforms, the design of coarse credit ratings and feedback in social learning settings.

InequaliTalks

Clémentine Van Effenterre (PSE PhD 2017), Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Toronto, is hosting a newly created podcast called InequaliTalks, a podcast about economics and inequality.

About the show

What is the most unequal region of the world? How deep does gender discrimination run in our societies? What happens to poor households during a housing boom? How is land distributed today? How can minimum wage reduce racial inequality? Can we really expect politicians to fix inequality? InequaliTalks presents accessible research done by young economists on one of the most pressing issues in the public conversation: inequality.

Vincent Ternisien: a course full of desires!

Vincent Ternisien (Master ETE 2016) – Chargé d’études économiques à l’IEDOM. LinkedIn

Vincent has always mapped his path according to his experiences and desires. Once his scientific baccalaureate is in his pocket, he joined the University of Cergy-Pontoise where he follows, in parallel with his degree (licence) in economics – finance – management, the university diploma «English and Corporate Economics» (DU ECE). These two years encouraged him to turn to research in economics and he continued his studies by joining the Magistère d’Économie of the University Paris 1 Panthéon – Sorbonne, which, for him, ticks all the boxes. At the end of his third year of licence, he follows an internship as a research assistant for the EPPP Chair (1) at the IAE in Paris, an excellent experience that allowed him to soak up very early on the methods of conducting studies and collecting data.

A year later, after having validated his degree (licence) in Econometrics, he pursued within the Master’s degree ETE – Theoretical and Empirical Economics (Université Paris 1, PSE), a demanding but also very enriching course according to him. He wrote his two master thesis under the direction of Pr. Francis Bloch (PSE, Paris 1) and Pr. Mireille Chiroleu-Assouline (PSE, Paris 1), and finally decided, on the advice of the latter, to postpone the start of a thesis. As of May 2016, he was looking for an internship at the end of his studies. To his surprise, he was quickly contacted – he said that the “PSE label” played a key role – and, following an interview, he joined the Economic Research department at Coface for a period of five months as a junior economist. where he will conduct various country risk studies. The internship is a trainer in every way to exceed his expectations and he stopped at that time his choice on positions related to macroeconomics.

Fervent admirer of the work of Pr. Gaël Giraud, then chief economist at the French Development Agency (AFD), Vincent got closer to the institution and found a position of Chargé d’études économiques at the Nouméa agency of the Institut d’émission d’outre-mer (IEOM) as a volunteer in civic service. Also driven by his desire to travel – trading the Parisian metro for the blue lagoon of New Caledonia is a decisive argument – he quickly decided and seized his chance: after several interviews, he joined the IEDOM, not in New-Caledonia, but finally on the island of Mayotte.

Once he had set foot on «l’île aux parfums», Vincent met the “Service à l’économie et communication (SEC)” team, with whom he quickly established strong ties. The experience in Mayotte was rich and stimulating: during his two and a half years of practice, he was in charge of analyzing the economic situation of the island, conducting thematic studies (in particular on the green economy and the economy of the sea) and the edition of an annual report that provided an important insight into its overall economy. His contract having now ended, Vincent plans to go to Guyana where many opportunities are open to him, probably for a position in the public sector, he entrusts us… See you soon to find out!
